Hello, my name is Betsy Kabana. I am eight years old, but in a few weeks on December 16, 1941, I will be nine years old. My family and I live in an apartment flat in New York City because my dad works as a doctor in uptown Manhattan. My family consists of me, the youngest, my older sister Jenny, who is fourteen, my older brother James, who is sixteen, my mother, my father and my grandmother Edna. My mother and father moved to America with my grandmother from Ireland to escape poverty and to make a new life for them. Something terrible had happened yesterday. I’m not exactly sure of what happened, but I have a pretty good idea. I know that the Japanese have bombed an American naval base. It is very sad because my best friend Kristen Harper’s, who goes to school with me at P. S. 118, father, was killed in the explosion on the ship ("Pearl" 1). My thoughts and prays go out to her family.
Lots of things have changed since the attack on Pearl Harbor. For example, when my father goes to work or the family wants to just go out, we all have to share the car with our neighbors the Zuckerman’s. We do this so that we can save gas and oil for the soldiers that are fighting over seas. There have also been changes in our diets since the attack of Pearl Harbor. Our family can hardly buy any meats, sugars, oils, canned fruits or vegetables and other specialty foods that are being saved to be sent over to our troops over seas. This new group called the Office of Price Administration calls this the rationing system ("World" 1). Sometimes, on occasion we would use our family stamps to buy food at higher prices that were being rationed. With a blue stamp my mother can buy sugar to make her special Christmas time cookies ("Rationing" 1). It makes me sad that she can’t make her special cookies more often anymore. I wonder how long this rationing will go on for ? Work Cited "Pearl Harbor attack." American History. 2007. ABC-CLIO.
